Attentional Selection, Maintenance and Gating: Foreword by Kit Carruthers
Attentional selection is what is going to be given your mental resources and enter attentional maintenance, attentional gating is what is even allowed in or kept out of your attention selection process altogether. Everything that enters your senses, presents itself from your memories, your predictions, your line of thought, your impulses, all of it enters into the semi-conscious selection process.

You decide to select it based on what information is already available to you, emotional salience, your associations and your opinion of the one presenting it to you or the intellectual force behind the one presenting it to you. If you have selected something and taken it apart, it's contents and any related contents will be tagged semi-consciously for permission, lack of permission or somewhere inbetween to re-enter your gating at some point in the future. Consciously you likely have a good idea of how heavily you tagged it however not necessarily. If you're distracted, overloaded, brain fogged or an unstimulated ADD head your gating system falters.

Once selected it is given whatever level of processing power is deemed appropriate by your gating process. Your attentional maintenance is now semi-consciously controlling what task sets are active and tagging them within the gating process and preventing mental deterioration, it's preventing interference utilizing attentional gating. If you suck at attention gating and or layering you're going to lose your task sets when interrupted. If you're an over-vigilant gater you're likely getting yourself into internal trouble, over fixating and always trying to salvage whatever it is you've selected refusing to disengage with your selection.

Schizoid is good for making people leave your attention, it's also good for making concepts leave your attention. If a concept bothered you or excited you it's easy enough to take it further out of your attention as you continue to work on the things that don't as much bother or excite you, not bring yourself back to it so you can get pissed off again or be impressed again. You're probably still gonna, but, less than the average person. You can fall into gating traps, however, you tagged something too violently it didn't necessarily require that level of lack of permission to re-enter your gating.
